Create an AI Agent with Microsoft Copilot Studio to save time and boost your productivity. Instead of spending hours on boring tasks like checking emails, searching websites, or managing data, you can let smart AI agents do it for you.
These agents are easy to build, friendly to use, and completely under your control. They don’t take over like robots in movies — they just help you get more done, faster.
With Microsoft Copilot, you can create AI agents that handle everyday work like:
- Answering customer questions
- Organizing your inbox
- Finding information on websites
- Helping with reports and analysis
In this guide, we’ll show you how to build a simple AI agent that helps users find what they need on a website — without clicking through lots of pages. It’s like having a smart assistant that works 24/7, so you can focus on the big stuff.
What are Copilot Agents?
Copilot Agents are smart AI assistants created using Microsoft Copilot Studio. They’re designed to help with specific tasks or answer common questions, especially in workplaces.
These agents can:
- Help employees quickly find answers.
- Make everyday work easier by handling repetitive tasks.
- Improve how people interact with systems by using natural, human-like language.
By combining business rules with AI, Copilot Agents make processes faster, smarter, and more user-friendly.
Requirement
Many clients ask Stallions to create a virtual support agent that helps users find their way around websites.
This is because websites with a lot of content can be hard to navigate, and users often struggle to find the exact information they need. A good virtual support agent should understand what users are asking and quickly give them the right answers—without making them click through lots of pages. This makes the experience smoother, saves time, and improves accessibility.
Step-by-Step Instructions
Let’s assume you already have access to Copilot Studio and the right license.
There are two ways to create an Agent:
- Use a quick setup with a natural language prompt.
- Manually set everything up yourself.
In this guide, we’ll focus on the second option—setting it up manually.
Step 1:
On the left-hand side of Copilot Studio, click on “Agents” to get started.
Step 2:
On the Agents page, click the “+ New agent” button to start creating your new virtual assistant.
Step 3:
Although exploring prompts can be helpful, this tutorial focuses on setting up the Agent manually. So, on the next page, click “Skip to configure” to move forward with manual setup.
Step 4:
On the next page, you’ll see several settings to customize your Agent. Go through them one by one:
- Language: Choose the language your Agent will speak.
- Name and Icon: Give your Agent a name and pick an icon to represent it.
- Description and Behavior Instructions: Write a short description and explain how you want your Agent to behave.
After filling out these details, scroll down and click the “Add Knowledge” button to move to the next step.
Step 5:
Choose “Public website” since your Agent will get info from a site that doesn’t need a login.
Step 6:
Type the public website URL and click “Add”.
Step 7:
If the website was added successfully, just click the “Add” button at the bottom of the form to continue.
Step 8:
Now you’re ready to finish! Just click the “Create” button in the top right corner to build your Agent.
Step 9:
Once your Agent is created, a sidebar will appear on the right side of the screen. This is where you can test how your Agent works.
🔔 Note:
Before testing your Agent, take a moment to fine-tune it so it works better.
Step 10:
To make sure your Agent only uses your specific knowledge source, go to the “Overview” tab and turn off the “General knowledge” option. This helps keep your Agent focused and accurate.
Step 11:
- Go to the “Topics” tab.
- Then, open the “System” group and click on the “Conversation Start” topic.
This is where you can customize how the Agent begins a conversation with users.
Step 12:
- Now you can personalize how your Agent greets users.
- In the “Conversation Start” topic, find the “Message” box and change the text to something more friendly or specific to your needs.
Note: Don’t forget to save your changes after editing.
Step 13:
- To make sure anyone visiting your website can use the Agent (without needing to log in), you need to turn off authentication.
- Click the “Settings” button at the top right corner to do this.
Step 14:
Now let’s turn off authentication so anyone can use the Agent:
- Go to the “Security” section.
- Open the “Authentication” settings.
- Select “No authentication”.
- Click Save and confirm your changes.
Step 15:
To make your changes live:
- Close the Settings panel by clicking the X in the top-right corner.
- Then, click the “Publish” button next to the Settings button.
This will activate your updated Agent so it’s ready to use.
Note:
You might see a warning about turning off authentication. Don’t worry—just ignore it and click “Publish” to continue.
Your agent is now ready for proper testing:
You can test your Agent right inside the right-hand sidebar of Copilot Studio.
But if you want to show it to others, it’s better to use the “Go to demo website” option.
To do this:
- Click the three-dot icon next to the “Settings” button.
- Then select “Go to demo website.”
Sharing Your Agent for Testing
A new webpage will open with your Agent already embedded in it.
To let others try it out, just copy the link to that page and share it with the person or group you want to involve in testing.
